“Congress of Starlings is a long-time favorite on the Chicago indie music scene. Aerin Tedesco and Andrea Bunch have been called ‘two of the most beautiful noises on the planet.’ The Starlings have brought their music to world famous venues like Milwaukee’s Summerfest, The National Women’s Music Festival, Halsted Market Days, Taste of Chicago, Pride Fest, Hard Rock Café, The House of Blues, and to beloved Chicago venues like The Old Town School of Folk Music, SPACE, Schuba’s and Martyr’s.”

Whether as an acoustic duo or a full band, Congress of Starlings joyfully delivers a unique, startling blend of unearthly harmonies, rich melodies, and unusual meters. Lyrically, their concerns reach from the depths of the heart, across the damaged American landscape, and through the mists of other worlds. Their voices are unmatched in their ability to move and enrapture audiences. Their songs are raw and powerful.

Congress of Starlings recent highlights ~

We produce Covers for Cover, now in its 17th year. Covers for Cover brings together trans and cis women artists to raise funds for women in need. Our annual shows are celebratory, uplifting concerts full of fans and artists cheering each other on! This December, Covers for Cover was proud to raise $25,000 for the Chicago Abortion Fund.

In June 2022, we sold out the 500+ seat Old Town School of Folk Music theater with our tribute to Joni Mitchell. Here’s Woodstock from that show.

Our music appears in Monty & Rose I and II, feature length documentaries about endangered piping plovers nesting in Chicago and the decision Chicagoans made to protect them. Hear The Gift.<

Farley Center Book Discussion of Brave Crossing by Author Maria Alvarez Stroud

Maria Alvarez Stroud “BRAVE CROSSING” Book Discussion
2:00 – 3:30pm, July 10, 2022

Meet at B.O.W.A. – Bur Oak Welcoming Area at the Farley Center (outdoor event)
Please bring your own water bottle and feel free to bring snacks to share.
Join us for an in-person event with Maria Alvarez Stroud, author of BRAVE CROSSING – A Journey In-Between.

Based on her father’s journey from the Philippines in 1916, she’ll be sharing highlights of his journey, as well as insights gathered through research and then lead a discussion hedged around several questions: How welcoming is America to the immigrants who leave everything from their previous lives behind? And how different is it today, from 100 years ago?

About Maria:
This is Maria Alvarez Stroud’s debut novel, although throughout her varied career, writing was central to her work, which included national productions and community engagement campaigns within public broadcasting, statewide educational efforts, and leading a nationally acclaimed media organization.

About the book:
Described as “A wonderful immigrant story”, and “a book you don’t want to put down”, BRAVE CROSSING is “A true story reimagined in a deeply personal way, Brave Crossing is only one man’s journey from another time yet shines a light on every immigrant’s struggle toward the promise of America.”

The novel is a coming-of-age saga told through the eyes of Ricardo, a young Spanish- Filipino, as he voyages to America in 1916. He embarked on his journey thinking he was leaving behind war, rampant disease, unspeakable deaths, and family secrets only to find a country on the cusp of race riots, World War I, and a global pandemic. He learns that each of these each of these events has the power to define who he is and whom he may become.

Books can be purchased from http://littlecreekpress.com/bookstore/brave-crossinga-journey-in-between/ through Maria at https://www.mariaalvarezstroud.com/ or Mystery to Me Bookstore. Books will also be available for purchase at the event.

Please feel free to come early or stay late to take a walk around the Farley Center.

Mount Horeb Comes Together For Ukraine Benefit

4/3/22

Ukraine Benefit Flyer
More than two million Ukrainians to date have been displaced because of the brutal invasion by Russia. Millions more are suffering great danger and deprivation in a war zone. Humanitarian aid is needed on every front.

The local Southwest Wisconsin Area Progressives organization and the Farley Center for Peace, Justice and Sustainability will be hosting a benefit concert to raise funds for humanitarian relief for Ukraine on April 3, at the historic old schoolhouse, featuring Intemperance Collective, a band that plays folk-dance and Eastern European music. The Sunday afternoon concert will begin at 2 p.m. The Schoolhouse is located at 110 North Second Street, in downtown Mount Horeb.

The band delights audiences with soulful vocals and a wealth of musical styles. A bevy of traditional Baltic instruments will be heard at the concert, as well as traditional instruments such as the accordion, trumpet, and cello. Eastern European instruments, including the Tamboura, gadulka, and tupan will ring out through the schoolhouse. The joyous music will delight attendees and share the spirit of the region, and donations will help to stem the humanitarian crisis.

Suggested donation for the event is $15. Of course, additional donations for the cause are most welcome. ALL proceeds from this event will benefit both Americares and Doctors Without Borders, two accredited humanitarian organizations working for Ukrainian relief. The event will have many surprises, and a special raffle with prizes from local businesses. We want to offer a safe and comfortable concert experience for everyone, so proof of COVID vaccination or a negative test will be required to attend.

Contact for more information on this event.

Gene Farley Sculpture Exhibit

Gene Farley Sculpture Exhibit
Opening Reception – Sat, Aug. 13,
1:00-2:30

Many of you who have been out to the Farley Center have noticed the many sculptures that are grace the land.

Gene Farley was a man of many talents. In addition to being the Chair of the UW Family Medicine, he was active in many progressive groups but he also enjoyed creating these large metal sculptures and drawing what he called doodles.

There are a total of 17 sculptures at the Center. There is another one in front of the Social Justice Center in Madison and another in Golden, CO.

We will kick off the Gene Farley Sculpture Exhibit on Sat, August 13 from 1:00-2:30 at the Farley Center. Please join us for light refreshments and take a map and take a self guided sculpture tour. This exhibit will be a permanent exhibit at the Center.

Linda Farley also was artistic and talented and enjoyed painting with watercolors. The watercolor is from a photo of Gene working on a sculpture. Linda named it “Sculpturer with Red Gloves.”
