Farley Center Tour of the Prairie Spirit Wildlife Sanctuary

October 30, 2016 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Come join the Farley Center for a visit.tour to Prairie Spirit Wildlife Sanctuary in Springdale. Dr. John Barnes established this sanctuary in 2000 and serves as the Director of the Sanctuary. Dr. Barnes has been a long time Farley Center Board Member from the early beginning of the Farley Center until August 2016.

“The Prairie Spirit Wildlife Sanctuary is 200 acres of land in Springdale, Wisconsin. The terrain is quite gentle and rolling, with good drainage and deep soils with few outcrops. Most of the property is formerly tilled land that has been restored to tall grass prairie, native to the area. The remaining land is central hardwood forest dominated by oaks and hickories. There also are a few planted softwood stands – spruce and red pine.”

“Three springs form ponds on the property and provide life-sustaining water year-round for the animals who call this place home. More than 130 bird species have been seen at the sanctuary, including chestnut-sided warbler, common yellowthroat, and grasshopper sparrow. White-tailed deer thrive here, along with many varieties of reptiles and amphibians.”

“The sanctuary was established in 2000 by the donation of a conservation easement by Dr. John Barnes. He worked with the Humane Society Wildlife Land Trust to ensure that his property would forever remain a safe haven for the wildlife who call it home. As with all land protected by HSWLT conservation easements, recreational and commercial hunting and trapping, as well as destructive logging practices, will always be prohibited.”

Meet promptly at 1:00 on Sunday, October 30 at the Prairie Spirit Wildlife Sanctuary located at 1811 Spring Rose Road, Verona, WI.
