Wes Jackson
Founder of the Land Institute
Wes Jackson is the author of several books and is recognized as a leader in the international sustainable agriculture movement and is the founder of The Land Institute. Based on research using the Natural Systems Agriculture model, the Land Institute has developed programs in wheat, sorghum, and sunflower that are generating crop lines displaying both perenniality and agriculturally-significant seed yield. This is a model based on nature, where perennial crops that won’t need to be replanted every year - leave soil more intact, prevents erosion, and allows important relationships between soil and plant to continue. Having more than one crop in a field mimics the polyculture that exists in nature. The Land Institute attempts to breed plants not presently used in agriculture into effective producers of perennial grains in intercropping conditions.
