An Unhidden Lair
Karen Reppen
Root systems too often remain hidden--and not only those attached to vegetation.
When searching for a location for my installation, I was pondering this year's theme "Rooted in the Land". I got to thinking about my own roots––those things that connect me to the earth and to all my relations; those things that feed me physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Then I happened upon a large uprooted tree with its complex root system exposed above the ground. I thought about how rare it is to have a chance to explore the complex and convoluted tendrils that served to anchor this massive body for what must have been decades. So I chose this place not really knowing what I might find, but anticipating that I'd discover new insights and appreciation for what held up this massive tree and what might be doing the same for me.
