Wind Horse: for David
Lewis Koch
A subtle line of repeating photographs of clouds on fabric was inspired by the idea of Tibetan prayer flags, which are popularly used to promote peace and compassion. When hanging–wherever they are placed–the blessings from the mantras printed on the flags are disseminated into the wind through natural decomposition of the cotton material. They are intended to be insubstantial: there and not there simultaneously. Within Tibetan iconography, wind horse has become a synonymous name for prayer flags, embodying prayers for well-being cast upon the wind. Here, this “Wind Horse” is dedicated to dear friend and fellow artist David McLimans, a student of Buddhist practice, whose mortal remains were interred at the Farley Center a few years ago, now blowing in the wind.
