LAND DEDICATION CELEBRATION

On Sept. 12 we formally dedicated the new land purchase and buried a time capsule to be opened up in ten years. Ho-Chunk Tribal Historic Preservation Officer Bill Quackenbush talked about the Nation’s connection to the land we are on and acknowledged the land dedication statement written by NPS Board Member Leslie Eisenberg.

LAND DEDICATION STATEMENT

The Farley Center and the Natural Path Sanctuary acknowledge that the land we currently occupy represents the ancestral lands of the Ho-Chunk Nation.  From time immemorial, the Nation has called the land we know today as Wisconsin home, even following the 1832 removal treaty that forced them to cede most of their traditional territory to find residence elsewhere; over the years, many have returned to Wisconsin. While the Ho-Chunk are the only sovereign Nation in Wisconsin that does not reside within reservation boundaries, they are active in acquiring land in and around their traditional communities and former settlement areas.  In the face of past injustice, we celebrate the vibrancy and strength of the Nation, our common land stewardship goals, the importance of a sense of place, and our shared commitment to the earth and its resources.
