Public Screening of Miss Representation

June 13, 2017 @ 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm

The film deals with the power of the media to shape how women are judged and viewed in Society.

Stories from teenage girls and provocative interviews with politicians, journalists, entertainers, activists, and academics, like Katie Couric, Rosario Dawson, Gloria Steinem, Margaret Cho, Condoleezza Rice, Rachel Maddow, and Nancy Pelosi, build momentum as Miss Representation accumulates startling facts and statistics that will leave the audience shaken, but armed with a new perspective.

The film was recently a major news story in Mt. Horeb, when shown in the topical, issue-oriented Social Problems class. The result which led to the the teacher, being suspended. The incident caused local and national coverage. The film is being screened for the public to view and access, at the Mt. Horeb Community Center, 107 N. Grove Street, at 7 pm on Tuesday June 13. The 90 minute film will be followed by a half hour panel discussion on the issue of media and the representation of women in society. The discussion will be led by Domestic Abuse Intervention Services (DAIS).

The media is selling the idea that girls’ and women’s value lies in their youth, beauty, and sexuality and not in their capacity as leaders. Boys learn that their success is tied to dominance, power, and aggression. We must value people as whole human beings, not gendered stereotypes. Watch the film and join the discussion on June 13.

This event is being sponsored by many organizations, Domestic Abuse Intervention Services, Dane County Rape Crisis Center, Southwest Wisconsin Area Progressives, Gene and Linda Farley Center For Peace, Justice and Sustainability, Wisconsin Democracy Campaign, Blue Jean Nation. Other groups are interested as well.
