Making a Planet-Friendly Farm Bill

The federal Farm Bill isn’t just vitally important to farmers, it impacts every American community—urban, suburban and rural. This massive legislation shapes national policies dealing with everything from nutrition and hunger to climate change and natural resource conservation. Hear how a new Farm Bill can be turned into a force promoting agricultural practices that are good for farmers, the land, air and water quality, consumers, and future prospects for life on our planet. Find out what you can do to influence what the next Farm Bill ends up looking like.

SPEAKERS

Darin Von Ruden is a third-generation dairy farmer who is president of Wisconsin Farmers Union. Darin has been active with Farmers Union at the local, state and national levels and is a seven-time recipient of the Silver Star Award, National Farmers Union’s highest recognition of membership development. He and his wife JoAnn live in Westby and transitioned the farm to the fourth generation when their son Brett purchased the machinery and 50-cow dairy herd.

Margaret Krome has spent over 30 years developing federal and state programs and policies supporting sustainable agriculture. Margaret’s interest in agriculture dates back to her childhood, as the grandchild of a Florida avocado and citrus grower. She is policy program director at Michael Fields Agriculture Institute and previously worked for the Wisconsin Rural Development Center.

Mike McCabe is a member of a team promoting regenerative agriculture for the climate action group 350 Wisconsin. Mike got his start milking cows and working the land on his family’s farm before going on to lead the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign for nearly two decades and establish the grassroots group Blue Jean Nation. Bob Lindmeier, Chief Meteorologist for WKOW Channel 27 will come to the Farley Center for Peace, Justice and Sustainability on Saturday, May 4, 2024 to discuss our changing local climate, what to expect in the future, and a clear plan of action to minimize the risk to our economy and way of life. Bob, with support from WKOW, often mentions climate change during his broadcast and is a frequent public speaker on the topic.

Bob earned his B.S. Degree in Meteorology from the University of Wisconsin in Madison in 1979. He started his career in 1980 at Weather Central, a weather consulting firm based in Madison. While at Weather Central, Bob observed the debut of the first television graphics system based on an Apple personal computer. Over the years at Weather Central he would witness the rapid development of new generations of graphics systems that revolutionized the television broadcast industry.

Weather Central also provided broadcast services to WKOW-TV in Madison. Through the 1980s, Bob presented weathercasts in the mornings and weekends. He was awarded the American Meteorological Society Broadcast Seal of Approval in 1987, and then became the Chief Meteorologist at WKOW-TV in 1989, a position he has held ever since. Bob produces and presents the weathercasts on the 5, 6, and 10 PM newscasts, Monday through Friday.

Bob believes strongly in climate change education, and has given numerous presentations to school, civic, and faith-based groups. He is a member of Citizen’s Climate Lobby, a non-profit and non-partisan organization focused on national policies to address climate change. Bob is married and has three children and two grandchildren.

Sanctuary: Environmental Land Art at the Farley Center

The Farley Center presents an art exhibition at the Overture Center.

Artist reception on Friday, Sept. 28 from 6:00-8:00. Enjoy light refreshments and music by WYSO Madison Music Makers while exploring the exhibit and meeting many of the participating artists.

“Sanctuary: Environmental Land Art at the Farley Center” exhibit is a photographic tour of these art installations. It will be on display in the Playhouse Gallery at the Overture Center for the Arts September 7-October 28, 2018.

Using natural materials from the land, area artists were invited to be inspired, expand creative boundaries, play with mystery, initiate surprise, explore and celebrate our connection to the earth. The theme was “Sanctuary” which could be interpreted however the artists chose. Sixteen artists took on the challenge and created a variety of pieces on the outdoor grounds of the Natural Path Sanctuary at the Farley Center near Verona, WI the summer of 2017.
