Gene Farley was a man of many talents. In addition to being the founder of the Farley Center for Peace, Justice & Sustainability, a family physician and Chair of the UW Department of Family Medicine and being active in many progressive groups, he enjoyed creating large metal sculptures and drawing what he called doodles.
There are a total of 17 sculptures at the Farley Center with another one in front of the Social Justice Center in Madison, WI and one in Golden, Colorado.
Linda Farley also was artistic and talented and enjoyed painting with watercolors. The watercolor here is from a photo of Gene working on a sculpture. Linda named it “Sculptor with Red Gloves.”
Farley Center “Adopt A Sculpture” Program
In order to get more community involvement and to spread the workload around a bit, we created a volunteer program called “Adopt a Sculpture” where individuals or partners selected a Gene Farley sculpture to adopt. That means they agreed to maintain the sculpture they have adopted, which includes, weeding, mulching and keeping the sculpture free of debris. We thank Farley Center Board Member Jeanne Meier for coordinating the sculpture volunteers. Click on the photo of the sculpture to see the volunteer who has adopted that specific sculpture.
